So, I am running fusion 7.1 pro and cannot locate vmnet-sniffer on my system anywhere... which is a bummer since i purchased f7pro specifically for malware analysys. I need to be able to take pcaps on the vmnet interfaces.... anyone know if support was dropped for vmnet-sniffer and if so is there anyway to get a copy of it that will work on yosemite and 7.1 pro?

Unable to get dual displays working on Solaris 11.2 guest

I attempting to get dual displays functional for my Oracle Solaris 11.2 guest.   Here are the specifics for my HW and software.

host HW - Mac Mini (2014)

          3 GHz Intel Core i7

          Memory - 16 Gb

host OS - Mac OS X Yosemite - 10.10.1 fully patched

VMWare Fusion Version 7.1.0 (2314774)

Guest OS - Oracle Solaris 11.2 + the guest additions that shipped with VMWare Fusion

So far, I have set

“View” -> “set all displays in full screen”

Also, in searching the archives for solution(s), I found an older post that suggested adding these settings to the “.vmx” file of the VM would help, unfortunately, they didn’t in this case:

svga.autodetect = "FALSE"

svga.numDisplays = "2"

Aside from this part, everything else works great.

Any pointers to getting a 2nd display functional are appreciated.

Thank you,

How can I speed up unbearably slow Windows 8.1, via Registry Tweaks at Command Prompt or otherwise

$

For access to the PC version of Quicken 2015, I was obliged to upgrade to Windows 8.1 and have also moved to Microsoft Office 2013.  The result is slow as molasses. For example, Word files often respond so slowly that I need to pause after typing a word. Then I wait for a few seconds until it appears on the screen.

TWEAKS TO WINDOWS 8 REGISTRY

I am hoping to implement Windows registry tweaks that eliminate unnecessary functions and settings, as described in this article:

http://www.askvg.com/master-tutorial-to-make-your-windows-8-super-fast/

Unfortunately, I don't understand the directory structure within VMware, which I believe is what is preventing me from running a file that I downloaded called "Registry Tweaks to Make Windows Faster.reg”.  I don’t know how to tell the Windows System’s Command Prompt to run that file.

The Command Prompt under Windows in VMWare comes up with my user name --  C:\Users\Colin Stewart>

I can copy that file to any directory, but I don't know how to point the Command Prompt to a particular directory.

OTHER METHODS

Within the Virtual Machine, I reset memory to 1500 MB from 1000 MB ("recommended") and reset it to use 2 processors cores rather than just one.

Those seem to have produced some improvement without noticeable degradation of Mac-side performance. But not enough.

I also made the changes in System Properties of Windows, as recommended in that ASKVG.com file. [Step 2 (Customize System Properties to Disable Shadows and Animations).] Those also seemed to result in only a minor improvement.

I am definitely open to other methods of speeding up the system.

SYSTEM INFO, IN CASE IT'S USEFUL

Computer:

MacBook Pro (late 2013)

Processor 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

OS X Yosemite

Version 10.10.1

VMware Fusion

Version 6.0.4

Memory was 1024 MB (recommended); reset to 1500 MB, which leaves 6692 for the Mac.

Processor cores: was 1; reset to 2

Thank you for whatever help you can provide.

vmware fusion 7, ubuntu black screen, yosemite

Macbook Air (11-inch, mid 2012). OSX Yosemite version 10.10.1. 2GHz intel Core i7, ubuntu-64 14.04, wmware fusion 7.1.

I am running ubuntu on fusion and after a restart of mac ubuntu is suddenly gone black screen. I can't do anything, and the mouse will only appear when its pointed on top of the screen (outside the ubuntu shell). Apparently fusion is working fine and I have installed a new ubuntu to confirm that, but I need my files and settings from the one that is black screened. I obviously can't access the terminal either because of the black screen. Is there a way to access the files on the black screened one through the newly installed ubuntu, if I can't fix the black screen issue?

Plz help! Any hints would be much appreciated.

VMware Fusion has encountered an error and has shut down Windows.

Summary:

I started encountering this problem in November and have been beating on it ever since including using VMware support and Apple support.

Full message in virtual machine window:

==== VMware Fusion has encountered an error and has shut down

==== down Windows.

====

==== Click Restart Windows to start Windows again.  Click Report to

==== collect and to request support from VMware.

====

==== <Ignore>    <Report...>   <Restart Windows>

Clicking <Report...> generates the the report

Clicking <Restart Windows> hangs system.

Various VMware Fusion, Virtual Machine commands do nothing.

Only way I have found to get going again is to Apple, Force Quit of VMware Fusion.

Two systems involved, iMac and MacBook.

Sound familiar to anyone else?

Gory Details: =====

Both systems were fine working well over multiple years.

Start point status was.

- iMacs and MacBook running VMware with no problems for multiple years.

- This includes multiple upgrades of MacOS and VMware Fusion.

- OS X 10.9.5 on both systems with latest upgrades.

- VMware Fusion 6 on all systems with latest upgrades.

- Virtual Machines on both systems nearly identical -- Windows 7, all derivatives of one base VM.

Problem started occurring only on iMac.

Over the weeks, with encouragement of VMware and Apple support have updated to Yosemite, installed VMware Fusion 7, and built Windows 8.1 machines from scratch.

Now problem happening on both systems with MacBook staying alive for about 15 minutes and iMac perhaps several hours.

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks.

How long does it take to Clean Up Virtual Machine and Reclaim Disk Space? Taking a while.

$

I just upgraded from Fusion 4 to 6.  Before converting my 131 GB VM to version 6 I did a Clean Up because it said I had 9 GB of reclaimable space.  I don't know how long it takes to run.  It has been running for over 20 minutes but there appears to be no way to determine if anything is happening.  It just shows a "Reclaiming Disk Space..." window with no way to cancel out.  The file size and date/time of the VM file is not changing.  Activity monitor shows between 3% and 5% of the processor with 13 to 15 threads being used.

I backed up the VM file.

When do I become concerned that nothing is happening?  How do I stop the process?

Thanks.

Fusion, netbooting OS X and the bless command, something isn't working.

Howdy all,

I have what may be a unique situation and I'm looking for some guidance.

I've got Fusion 7.1.0 (2314774) up and running on a MacBook Pro and everything is working just fine except for netbooting to install versions of OS X.

I can install OS X in to a VM with the standard installers and that works just fine. What I am then trying to do is use the following bless command to get the VM to reboot from a Netboot server.

sudo bless --netboot --booter tftp://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/mavericks.nbi/i386/booter -kernelcache tftp://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/mavericks.nbi/i386/x86_64/kernelcache --options "rp=nfs:nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn:/private/tftpboot/NetBoot/NetBootSP0:mavericks.nbi/NetBoot.dmg"javascript:;

All of the relevant files do exist and are all on the same server. It is the case that the Netboot server is not on the same subnet/VLAN as the MacBook running fusion. All seems to be fine and the bless command reports that the EFI has been updated. However, when I then reboot the VM it simply boots back in to the vanilla OS X 10.9 that is on the VM.

Can anyone spot anything that I am missing? Should this work?

Please and thank you

Fusion and build 9926 of Windows 10, Window Resizing Issue

VVMware Fusion and build 9926 of Windows 10 has window resizing issue, in that the Win 10 window will not resize to the Fusion window.

ALso, installing tools goes into an infinite loop.

Parallels 10 has the same issues.

Any word from vmware as to when Fusion will support Windows 10 Preview?  Think Win 10 will work in Fusion tomorrow when it is released?

Can't install Windows 10 Build 9926

Hi,

I'm running VMWare Fusion 7.1.0 (2314774) Pro on Yosemite.

When I install from the ISO the installation hangs on getting ready it just won't finish (run for an hour).

I did not change any settings of the VM.

I was able to install a previous build though.

Keep getting 'Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.' error

Im am trying to open VMware Fusion Pro 5.0.5 on my Mac and it keeps giving me the following errors in order:

1. Screen Shot 2015-01-26 at 11.11.51 am.png

2. Screen Shot 2015-01-26 at 11.11.57 am.png

3. Screen Shot 2015-01-26 at 11.12.03 am.png

I would be extremely grateful if anyone knows how I can fix this and access my fusion as I urgently need to use some software within it.

I have done a 'collect support info' (attached) as I have seen this mentioned in a few post but unfortunately it means absolutely nothing to me. Message was edited by: Carla15

Very slow performance on iMac, please help

I installed VMware Fusion on my iMac and my normal iMac works flawlessly. However, the VMware is running MUCH MUCH slower. Here are the specs on my computer:

2.7GHz i5

8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

I thought it might be a ram issue even though on the VM side of things I'm having only one internet window open, and it is showing that I am allocating 2GB of ram.

What do you think could cause these slow speeds and what can I do to fix it?

Thank you!

How to set screen resolution in Yosemite guest?

Is there a way to set the screen resolution in a Yosemite host?  After installing VMWare Tools (and before installing them), the guest display does not resize based on a resizing of the guest's window.  Instead, right and left letter boxes appear and the display appears to stay 4:3 in the middle.

Yosemite, Fusion 7 (not pro), and my 15" Mac Book Pro (Retina display)

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me...

I recently purchased Fusion 7 and Windows 8.1 in order to run a specific windows based program on my MacBook. The installation went well. I had no problems. However, some of the text (especially on the embedded controls) are very difficult to read. It seems the text doesn't fit within the control. I hope I'm using the correct terms... For example, some of the dialog boxes have buttons I'm supposed to click on to make a selection. The text within the button is very difficult to see. Additionally, within this specific software package, I'm supposed to enter data in what appears to be an embedded spreadsheet. The rows are so thin, I can't even see what I'm typing... I'm hoping this has something to do with the display settings on my Mac and within Windows 8.1 itself.

Please help!!!

Attach Mac Bluetooth to Guest on Boot?

$

Hello,

I'm looking to have the built-in Apple Bluetooth connect to a guest VM on boot. I can manually connect the bluetooth to the VM but this is inconvenient as every time i restart the VM I must also connect the bluetooth, log in to the vm, and then restart a service that relies on the bluetooth adapter.

Is there a configuration file I can edit to automatically attach the bluetooth?

I know about the option to "share bluetooth" but unfortunately this is not a solution for my purposes.

How do I apply VMWare Fusion 7 for Parallels after Parallels has been removed.

Does Parallels need to be installed on my workstation if I'm using the VMWARE Fusion 7 for Parallels upgrade download?

I already pre-qualified for the upgrade with my Parallels license key,

I have removed Parallels from the workstation since it was causing problems and do not wish to install Parallels again just to install VMWare Fusion instead.

Thank you.

Migrate Existing Mac to VM

$

I would like to migrate an existing OSX 10.9.5 machine to a 10.9.5 Guest VM running on a 10.10.1 host.

My situation is:
I own a 10.9.5 MBP that I use everyday.  I have development tools on the machine that I am not sure work on Yosemite.

I bought a new MBP that runs 10.10.1.

I would like to migrate the old machine en-masse to as a guest machine, then I can migrate piecemeal off of the VM onto the native machine.

I have tried several things, but this seemed to get me the farthest:

1) Build a simple guest machine using "Install OS X Mavericks.app".

2) Boot that VM using safe mode.

3) Connect my USB based time machine backup.

4) Start OSX migration assistant (not VMWare migration assistant).

5) chose to migrate from time machine.

6) wait.

I have not been successful.  Something goes wrong each time:

1) Sometimes the USB drive is not visible.

  - to fix this I go to disk utility and repair the disk.

2) Sometimes migration assistant will not see the USB drive despite it being clearly mounted.

  - at this point I just back out of migration assistant and reboot the machine.

3) One time migration assistant locked up.

  - I did a shutdown from VMWare menu.

4) Several times the Migration Assistant stopped running and the machine reverted to a login screen.

   - I put a marker in the syslogs before I started MA and after it stopped; I saved the logs.

I am a bit frustrated with #1 and #2 because the USB drive does not report any errors while being repaired and it mounts reliably on the host machines.

Regarding #4, before I post my logs I would like some confirmation that this is possible AND I am on the right track.

Apple support politely denied help as soon as I said VMWare.

Any ideas?

Stupidly, I was taken in by the claims for Fusion 7 of

Even Better Performance

However, my VM was rendered unusable as the video performance was terrible. Ran Windows Experience and it proved a halving of video perf.

I am fed up of buying products that don't work, or worse, make false claims.

I have now spent considerable time restoring 6.0.5, which works fine. Thank God for professional software such as Mac OS X, so a restore of application and all the stuff that accompanies it was possible.

If you too are in this position, join this list.

And, no, it's not Apple's fault. 6.0.5 under Yosemite worked absolutely fine.

Downgrading VMWare Tools - how do I do this?

$

0

Just endured the time-wasting experience of installing Fusion 7, only to find the video performance renders it, no pun intended,  unusable.

I would like some guidance around what mess I may have with VMWAre Tools now.

  1. Powered down the VM
  2. Downgraded the Hardware in Settings > Compatibility to Vn 10
  3. Uninstalled Fusion 7
  4. Using Time Machine, restored Fusion application 6.0.5. plus preferences and allied files
  5. Launched 6.0.5
  6. Seems to run fine

But - do I need to do anything to VMWare Tools? (Because when I 'upgraded' to 7.1, I 'upgraded' the VMWare Tools)

Thank you
