This has also been a problem in version 5. Messages seems to set up, but cannot log in. It either claims a network problem (while there isn't one), or asks to contact support.
This might be related to security, since it appears that Messages actually access NVRAM for something (maybe a token?)
The host is Lion, but I will also try ML.
