Outlook 2010 attachment and registration problems

I have just migrated a VM from Parallels 8 to VMware Fusion 6 with Win7 as guest OS. I switched because my university now supports Fusion with a site license so this is a cheaper upgrade path to Mavericks (unless it takes a lot more of my time to fix what broke).

1. After conversion to Fusion VM, the copy of Office 2010 in the Win7 guest is seen as not registered. The MAK key for Office 2010 that worked in the Parallels VM is not accepted by Microsoft. Any suggestions what is broken here? I've contacted the site admin here to see if there are any issues with the registration code.

2. Attachments in Outlook do not open. In settings for the VM, I have Shared Folders 'ON' and mirrored folders for desktop, documents, and downloads. Under 'Default Applications' I checked 'Open you Windows files and web links using Mac applications'. This works for weblinks. But attached documents (e.g. PDF, DOCX) do not open in either OS. I get the open attachment dialog, but then nothing happens when I click OK. I can drag attachments to a folder on the Mac and open them that way -- very cumbersome. Otherwise, drag and drop attachments on and off email works fine. Any suggestions as to how to get attachments to open?

OS X 10.8.5, Fusion 6.0.2, Outlook Version: 14.0.7106.5003 (32-bit), MacPro 3,1 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon, 10GB RAM

P.S. When I configure the default applications under 'Open your Mac files and web links using Windows applications' I see two versions of 'Microsoft Outlook.app' one with the Parallels logo on the lower left and one without it. The latter is apparently the VMware version and email links open in the Fusion VM when I choose it. How do I get rid of the Parallels copy of application links in that menu?
