I figured this out and wanted to share the solution.
A user just installed Quicken 2014 Deluxe and Quicken presented its registration wizard on top of the normal Quicken view. But the registration window was totally messed up: text entry boxes where hollow and showed the background (i.e., a Quicken checking register) through; moving the registration window caused the hollow entry boxes' content to change to whatever was display underneath that window (i.e., a Quicken checking register); also, all the text entry labels were missing; clicking/guessing in an empty box would allow typing in some boxes but not others. The rest of Quicken appeared fine.
In VMWare Fusion 6's Settings/Display, I switch Advanced graphics (DirectX stuff) OFF and that fixed the problem.
