VM can't find raw USB boot disk: Mavericks host OS, Windows 7 guest OS

Mavericks host OS

Windows 7 guest OS

Guest boot disk is a USB 3 external drive

I configured the disk using vmware-rawdiskCreator, which gave me a .vmdk file that seems to have everything it's supposed to.  The disk settings in the .vmx file just consist of

scsi0.present = "TRUE"

scsi0.virtualDev = "lsilogic"

scsi0:0.present = "TRUE"

scsi0:0.fileName = "blahblah.vmdk"

But the guest BIOS can't find a boot disk, and doesn't show any disks when I hit F2.

Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
