With my old MacBook Pro (2007 model), I ran Windows XP natively on a Boot Camp partition, and used a free Windows OBDII program with a bluetooth OBD module to reset my check engine light and read the trouble codes. Now I have a new Retina MacBook Pro with Mavericks (10.9.2). I can't install Windows XP on it - only Win 7 and above. I assume I can run XP in Fusion (I have my old MBP's hard drive with the XP Boot Camp partition on it in an external case). However, I just read this on the VMWare website:
Fusion has the following limitations for Bluetooth support:
■
Only out going connections are allowed. A virtual machine may establish a connection to a remote Bluetooth device, but remote devices do not see services that virtual machines try to advertise.
I'm a little slow when it comes to nomenclature. I need two way communication; the OBDII module sends the trouble codes and other engine data to the software, and I send commands to turn off the check engine light. There's this too:
Fusion supports these types of Bluetooth devices:
■
Cell phones
GPS receivers
Serial Port Profile (SPP) devices
Most other devices
Fusion has limited support for these types of Bluetooth devices:
■
Input devices (HID): Can be attached to guests when using Linux/Mac OS hosts, but not on Windows hosts.
OBEX File Transfer: Outgoing (guest to device) transfers only. Guest may not act as an OBEX server.
I'm assuming, but not positive, that my ELM327 obdII module is not an HID input device.
I guess the short version of all this is – can I get this to work or should I just spend the >$40 on one of the few OSX OBDII software packages? I'd rather spend the money on Fusion. TIA for any help!
