Here is my configuration:
Host: 15" MacBook Pro (i7, 16GB memory), OS X 10.9.4
VMWare: 6.0.4 (1887983)
VM: configured with 6GB RAM and 1 CPU
Guest OS: Ubuntu 12.04
I have noticed that the Ubuntu system seems to slow down. It starts out running normally, but then everything gets slower: web browsing, compiling and running Java in the IntelliJ IDE, and even a little C program that should be completely CPU bound.
About that C program: It does absolutely no system calls except for a few early mallocs, (I checked using strace). Also, top indicates that this process is 95+% user time. The program times some some simple calculations over an array and reports an average time in msec. Here are the times I see in a few consecutive runs, conducted over a few minutes:
1.889660
1.913220
1.931440
2.630770
3.344290
11.622920
10.603050
11.553260
11.717490
While this happens, the host is typically doing very little, maybe playing some music.
This problem appears to survive a bounce of the VM. I have to reboot the host to restore VM performance.
What might be going on? How can I investigate the problem? I do all my development work in the VM, so this is a really serious problem for me.
