error: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to

Very new to VMware. Running VMware fusion 5 on Macbook pro. I had Windows XP set up nicely but after trying to connect my iphone via bluetooth to XP it froze. Eventually I quite VMware Fusion but now it won't start and I get this error message: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to

I looked up the knowledge base and found a reference to this message: Fixing an unexpected signal 10 error in Fusion (1018757)

I followed the instructions to delete .lck and .vmss file and folders

I found the line: 'checkpoint.vmState' and it was as it should have been according to the instructions. That is, I didn't have to modify it. It was already like this: checkpoint.vmState = ""

The VM still won't start and I still get the same error message: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to

Can anyone help me to recover it please?
