VMWare Fusion 6 Extremely Slow on i5 iMac / Yosemite

Hi,

I'm having trouble with running VMWare Fusion 6 on my i5 iMac.

I recently did a complete reinstall of the OS, and it is now running a fresh Yosemite with VMWare Fusion 6.0.5.

When running a freshly installed Windows 8.1 image (doing essentially nothing, with no extra apps running) I

see the following:

* vmware-vmx process is constantly at around 100 % (in top)

* Computer becomes extremely sluggish, there is considerable delay even for typing text into TextEdit.

* When I turn off VMWare Fusion, the computer goes back to normal.

(This problem is not new to Yosemite. I have had the same issue on Mavericks and Mountain Lion, and I had

all about given up on running VMWare on the computer, but I had hoped that a complete reinstall might help things)

Computer data:

Mid-2011 iMac, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

4Gb 1333MHz DDR3 (1Gb set to the VM, as suggested by VMWare)

Fusion drive (256 ssd + 2tb)

Is there anything I can do to investigate?
