So it seems pretty clear looking at my VMware Fusion 7 Pro demo that there are some glaring omissions with regard to replacing other solutions for managing ESXi with Fusion. The claim in their "feature matrix" that it supports connecting to ESXi. But the reality is that you probably can't rely on it completely. And it seems to have nowhere near the capabilities that even Workstation has for managing ESXi. Considering what they charge for Fusion these days, and how often they are back looking for another upgrade fee, I would hope the feature differences would be shrinking. I'm interested in what others are thinking on this topic. When I saw Fusion 7 Pro support for ESXi, I was hoping to replace my Workstation license with ESXi and manage from Fusion on my Mac. But I don't especially want to pay for vSphere. Our setup is really too small to justify vSphere and related "big iron" additions. I have grown accustomed to VMware, and I resist switching to a different hypervisor.
