every time my ubuntu-gnome linux guest starts up, it is in a very low resolution window.
(I can't start up on full-screen mode, because then my guest has a corrupt display. this is almost surely a vmware-linux interaction bug. switching to window mode and then back to full-screen mode fixes it.)
vmware-config-tools.pl does not install X drivers any longer, "Skipping X configuration because X drivers are not included."
ubuntu 14.x gnome has no panel to set the resolution.
this should not be obscure: ubuntu gnome guest can't be that unusual. how come this isn't working?
how can I set the default startup display size??

sofar, vmware fusion 7.0 was not worth the upgrade from 6.0. it still seems very buggy on the edges, even on older guests.
