"Disk Clean Up Virtual Machine" corrupts the disk image?

I have VMWare Fusion 4.x and a Virtual Machine with Windows XP (the virtual disk image file is formatted in NTSF).

In order to gain some room on my Mac's hard disk, I first ran the "Disk Cleanup" wizard of Windows XP (cleanmgr.exe) to remove or compress some files.

Then I shut down the VM and I used the "Disk Clean Up Virtual Machine" tool available inside:

Virtual Machine > Settings > General

The tool was able to effectively claim back some 3 GB of hard disk space.

But the next time I started up the virtual machine, Windows XP launched the Check Disk (CHKDSK) utility and found several errors.

Here is the log:

Volume label is Windows.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You

may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended

Is someone aware that Fusion's "Disk Clean Up Virtual Machine" can corrupt the disk image file?

Is there some good reason to be seriously worried about this?

Thank you.
