Can't ping vM from Host

I created 2 VMs.  I could ping them  both initially.  Initially they were set up for DHCP.

I changed one to static IP.  Now I can ping the VM with DHCP assigned IP, but not the VM with a static IP.

1.  If I need to assign static IPs in fusion, how do I know what subnet to put the IP on?

2.  To assign static IPs, how do I determine the default gateway to use?

3.  To assign static IPs, how do I determine the subnet mask to use?

4.  To assign static IPs, how do I determine the dns domain suffix to use (myvmname.local)?

5.  To assign static IPs, how do I get the host OSX 10.9 computer to be able to ping the VM's IP afterward?  Do I need routing table entries?

Thanks!
