questions about setting up Win Server 2008 R2 AD for testing binding on a Mac.

Hi all,

First of all, apologies if my questions below have been addressed already. My searches in google and on this forum have not produced the answers i've been looking for. Please kindly point me in the right direction or post links if my questions have been addressed already.

I'm trying to set up Win Server 2008 R2 on my Mac at home for testing/learning. I'm new to Win Server 2008 but not to OS X Server. I just want to set up a simple Active Directory domain to test another Mac by binding it to the Open Directory and Active Directory servers. I'm trying to test the "golden triangle" set up and other odds and ends.

Here's my current set up:

Mac: Running OS 10.8.2 with Server.app 2.2.1. I have a static IP from my Comcast router set up on the WiFi interface using 10.0.0.2/255.255.255.0. I'm using the Comcast provided DNS settings. I'm using VMWare Fusion 4.1.4

I already installed Server 2008 R2 but have not set up any roles yet.

1. For what I am trying to accomplish, what are the best practices?

2. From what I know, I should set up Server 2008 R2 within Fusion with a static IP address but I am getting conflicting info on how to do this. Which networking mode is the best for the set up I am trying to do (Bridged, NAT, or Host only).

I tried to set up Server 2008 with a static IP from the Comcast wifi router (I reserved a block of IPs for static use on the router) but that didn't work. I was not able to connect to the internet. This was in Bridged Mode.

I then switched to NAT with DHCP and it worked.

3. How can I set up Server 2008 within Fusion to use a static IP that I can bind Mac clients to?

4. Would I use the DNS IP addresses from Comcast within Server 2008? If not which should I use?

That's all the questions I can think of for now.

Thanks very much for your help.
