Using VMWare Fusion 5 with VMWare Fusion Migration Agent for PC

Hi,

I tried to Migrate my Windows7 PC to my new iMac using VMWare Fusion 5 which i downloaded as a demo version.

I wanted to make sure it works before buying it.

So far it didn't and I am stranded, hence this posting, just in case some one could help me finish this migration.

Here below is what I did:

STEP 1: install software

  • Installed the VMWare SW on the iMac (demo version) and the PC.
  • There was no issue for the iMac and it went smoothly on the PC for the first installation only (see below).

STEP 2: set up the PC

  • All apps are closed on the PC.
  • The firewall has been deactivated.
  • The antivirus is turned OFF.
  • The user account modifications have been done as shown below
  • The wifi connection is shut down on both the iMac and PC

STEP 3: connect the machines

  • The PC has been switched off and rebooted to be sure all mod ifs were taken into account by the Windows machine.
  • The iMac and the PC are connected through an ethernet cable, machine to machine.

STEP 4:  test the connection

  • The iMac can see the PC and I am able to move files from the PC to the iMac.
  • I already transfered a few without any problem but it is not what I want: moving just the files is not enough.

STEP 5: launch the Migration assistant on the iMac and the PC

  • Launch the SW on the PC. Here I get the 4 digit numbers on the PC of course
  • Launch the Assistant on the iMac by clicking the icon on the dock bar.
  • Enter the  4 digits  in the iMac before keying in the administrator's  id and password then press the Continue
  • At this point the VMWare app can't connect to the the machine and i always get the same message:
  • 'The converter could not connect to the remote machine'.

At this point I called the support center and was directed to the Californian user HelpDesk then an other one and tried again to make the transfer work.

STEP 6: verify that the iMac can see the PC through the Ethernet link

  • This is easy to do and I could transfer files through the Finder.

STEP 7: remove the software from the PC.

  • The 'removal ' was done with the windows tools.
  • Files left after the process was completed were removed manually
  • 2 references are left in the registers and can't be removed
  • The PC has been rebooted and set up as described in STEP 2

STEP 8: reinstall the SW on the PC

  • I downloaded the SW version 4.0.7 stored it and launched the '.exe' but it failed launching
  • I then removed it as I did in STEP 7, cleaned it all again again and tried with version 4.0.6 but it failed again.
  • The installation starts then aborts in the middle of the Files Transfer.
  • In the Program Directory the files are apparently correctly installed and I get something called p2vbcast.exe stored under VMWare / VMWare vCenter Convert Standalone…

Current:

I think I did this half a dozen times with plenty of screen copy and STEP 7: is likely to be desperation, unless some one has a idea of what may go wrong:

  1. on the PC side when installing the SW
  2. during the transfer phase that can't start as the iMac can't apparently connect to the remote PC.
  3. will I get more support if I buy the SW, whatever the outcome may be ???

Thank you for your comments and ideas.

Marc.
