Trying to boot .dmg file created from mac...

I have a .dmg file created from a 10.8.5 system. I'm running Mavericks and the latest version of Fusion. So far, I've used the vmware-rawdiskCreator to create a .vmdk from the mounted .dmg file. When I go to use the .vmdk in a new custom VM, it is greyed out and cannot be added a new VM. It is also greyed out when I try to add it as a secondary drive to an existing VM. I've tried to create a custom VM, and the edit the .vmx file, replacing the default .vmdk with the one from my mounted .dmg file, however when I go to boot the system, I receive the error "Insufficient permission to access file"... Any thoughts on this are much appreciated.
