Hello,
There is another thread on this issue and the solution, marked as answered, doesn't work for me. I think that once a thread is answered, it is closed off to further questions so I am creating this one.
I have Fusion 6.0.2 running on a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display and with VMWare Tools installed. The guest VM is Ubunto Studio 12.0.4 Long Term Stable release.
Using the full retina display resolution in VM --> Settings makes for impossible reading so I've had to turn it off. Although I can make the fonts and icons larger on the desktop, there is no way to do that in general for applications as far as I can tell.
For the Ubuntu guest vm, I find 1920x1200 the best resolution for what I need in full screen mode. BUT, whenever I login, whenever I go to single screen view and back, etc. Fusion reverts the display to 1440x900.
Also, when I am not in full screen mode, the display does not resize properly to show the full desktop. Application windows are truncated and overlapped. There are no scroll bars, no way to pan to the rest of the desktop.
I tried adding
pref.autoFitGuestToWindow = "FALSE"
pref.autoFitFullScreen = "stretchGuestToHost"
to the relevant preferences file in various combinations per the other thread with the VM shutdown and Fusion stopped. No go. The resolution gets reset by Fusion.
I've tried having 1920x1200 setup within the VM by running scripts, modifying startup files to change X server parameters, etc. but if I go out of full screen mode and back or pause and restart the VM, the 1440x900 resolution comes back.
I checked the VMWare Tools command line interface for options to turn off this 'feature' but with no luck.
Interestingly, if I remove VMWare Tools, the problem goes away. I can keep the 1920x1200 setting across sessions. If I go to single screen mode, the icons and windows within the desktop resize themselves so I can see all of the desktop within the smaller window. But, I lose the ability to share Mac files with the VM and there is no Unity mode without Tools.
I had a VMWare engineer on the phone with a WebEx a few days ago and he had no idea why it was happening. I'm waiting for him to get back to me but I thought the community might know what's going on here.
