Fusion 6.0.3, can't select .vmdk in "Choose virtual disk" dialogue.

Created a .vmdk using Ghost 11.5.1 on a Windows PC (have done this before many times.)   In Fusion 6.0.3 when I Add a new VM, More options, Create custom, and Choose virtual disk, the file browser shows the .vmdk as greyed out, I cannot select it.    I was able to do this previously (but I'm not certain the exact version of VMware 6.x when I was last able...)

Tried the command line tool "vmware-vdiskmanager -R filename.vmdk" and first get a message "VixDiskLib: Invalid configuration file parameter.  Failed to read configuration file." but then the .vmdk file is in fact repaired "The virtual disk, 'filename.vmdk', was corrupted and has been successfully repaired."   Doing the repair still doesn't make the .vmdk selectable in the Choose virtual disk dialogue, however.  What am I missing?  Or is .vmdk no longer supported as a source when creating a new VM in Fusion 6.0.3?  FYI running Fusion 6 on Mavericks.
