Responsive guest OS & host OS, but solid (not spinning) beach ball

Pretty much every time I run VMWare Fusion, after a few minutes I end up with my mouse cursor as a solid (not spinning) beach ball.  The VM and the OS still remain responsive, but instead of a mouse pointer, I have a beach ball.  Even if I close Fusion, my mouse cursor in Mac OS remains a beach ball until I restart.  This problem does not really happen when I run other software on the Mac, but googling for the problem it seems that it can happen for other people as well.  I imagine that either my hardware gets unresponsive or this could be a OSX problem, but does anybody have a work-around for just getting the cursor back to normal?  If I could just click a "fix my mouse" button, then I'd be fine with that.

I am running VMWare Fusion version 6.0.4 and Mac OS 10.9.3 (Mavericks), Intel i5 CPU, 8GB RAM.  The guest OSes I am running are WindowsXP and WIndows 7.
