mounting ubuntu linux guest partition on OSX host?

(first, advice: openGL 3D acceleration does not work with ubuntu linux 14.04.1 guests.  it corrupts the display.)

(this is not a boot camp VM.)

I would like to export the linux guest partition (drive) to my OSX host.  not to the network...just to the host OSX.  (I am not an expert network administrator.)   sharing the guest file system seems a lot safer than to let my guest share the host file system.  if I install a malicious program in the VM, I want to remain safe in the host.

is this not a common need?

alas, I don't see how I could do this.  there used to be something like vmware-mount that worked if the vm was not running.  ideally, this access should work regardless of whether the vm is running or not.  that is, if the VM is not running, a fuse filesystem could understand the vmdsk design.  if it is running, to avoid corruption, the fuse file-system could go through the running fusion app.

advice appreciated.

regards,
