Splitting a disk in 2GB chunks does not work

I want to use several VMs both on a MAC and a windows machine, so I want to store it on a FAT32-formatted disk.

For this I'd like to split the vmdk file into chunks of max 2/4GB size.

I tried to change the type of the disk with the vdiskmanager on the command line (specifying type 1 as new disk type) and also tried the "Split disk" option in the GUI in Fusion.

But both operations fail, the generate several linked vmdk files - ok, but some are still larger than 2/4GB. I tried several times to no avail. So I'm unable to transfer the VM to the FAT32-disk.

Anyone experienced a similar issue? Are there any option to be set somewhere?

The VMs are standard W7-Enterprise installations, disk sizes vary from 20 - 40GB.

Thanks for any hints.

Jan
