Black Screen at Startup in Ubuntu 14.04 Guest on Mac

I have been trying to solve this problem for the whole day without success. I have already reinstalled my virtual machine once and updated Fusion from version 6 to 7, but the issue reoccured on the latest virtual machine and Fusion version as well. It seems to be happening only after I updated the Ubuntu packages.

Host:

  Macbook Air mid 2013, 8GB, iCore 7, 512GB SSD

  OS X Yosemite

VMWare Fusion 7.1 (same problem on Fusion 6)

Guest:

  Ubuntu 14.04 (64 bit)

  Latest VMWare Tools installed

Issue:

On startup of Ubuntu, the BIOS screen shows up, then Ubuntu's splash screen shows up then the screen turns all black and the guest is unresponsive to any keyboard/mouse inputs.

Happened on a brand new installation of Ubuntu. The only changes I've done to Ubuntu were updating it's packages and installing some developer packages through apt-get, then customized the appearance of the desktop (in system properties, nothing in command line). It all worked well, until I rebooted the guest, when it all went to the blank black screen and I couldn't recover since then. Even holding down the SHIFT key to enter Grub doesn't work. I had to use the Live CD to update Grub's settings to force the display at startup, so now I can at least go to recovery mode. In recovery mode I tried reinstalling VMWare Tools, but it didn't solve the issue. I also failed to diagnose any graphics issues. Disabling 3D Acceleration in Fusion Settings didn't help.
