VMWare Fusion 6.0.5: Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.

I have been running VMWare Fusion 6 on my MacBook Pro with Mavericks for some time.  I just got a Mac Mini with Yosemite and I want to copy one of my virtual machines from the MBP to the Mini.

I tried just copying the vmware.vm from the MBP to the Mini but when I open it and try to start it I get the following errors:

  • Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.

Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.

  • Failed to initialize monitor device.
  • Internal error

I also tried importing the vmware.wm file but it is always greyed out.

How can I copy a VM from one Mac to another?
