Connecting usb devices to VM running headless

Hi all,

I am running my VMs (ubuntu 14.04) headless from the command line using the vmrun executable

vmrun start [path to vmx] nogui

which allows me to ssh in my vm and do all I need from there.

However, I can't seem to figure out how to connect a USB device (say a serial adapter) to said VM running headless.

Can anyone help with that? I want to connect a usb device that is plugged in my mac to the VM. Similar to the action of the dialog box that pops when you run the gui and plug a device in the computer.
