One windows app cannot open files on Mac folder

Fusion 12 on Mac 10.15.6.

I setup shared folders and have added my Mac Documents and Software as shared folders.

I have 3 Windows apps that use the data on the Mac folder. 2 apps works without a problem reading/updating and saving data back to the Mac folder. But my Quickbooks app cannot open the company files on the Mac folder. I can see all files in Windows explorer but when I start Quickbooks and select the company file it takes a while before an popup tells me that the file could not be opened. The error code is -6176 0 but I assume this is a Quickbooks error code.

Quickbooks has a check program that I ran but it did not find any issues.

I tried to mirror the Documents folder, but it did not make a difference.

I am hoping that somebody in the community is running Quickbooks in VMware on a Mac as well and might be able to comment on this issue.

Fusion 12 can't use Boot Camp volume

Running: VMware Fusion Player Version 12.0.0 (16880131)
on software: macOS Big Sur Version 11.0 Beta (20A5364e) (latest / beta 6)
on hardware: MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)

ScreenShotBCVMerror.png

Boot Camp VM from Fusion 11 encountered error: The operation on file "/dev/disk0s1" failed.

This error occurs when "Attempting to start up from: -> EFI VMware Virtual SATA Hard Drive (0.0) ..."

The problem persists when starting fresh and creating a new Boot Camp VM.

All non-BootCamp VMs seem to work fine so far.

What I've tried:

  • Granting Full Disk Access to VMware Fusion 12
  • Deleting the VM are starting anew with VMware Fusion 12
  • Disabling SIP
  • Reset NVRAM
  • Running First Aid on all disks/volumes from Recovery Mode
  • Launching VMware Fusion as root (sudo)
  • Booted MacBook directly into boot camp partition and:
    • verified free space
    • verified no file system problems/errors
    • installed updates

Notable/relevant errors in Console App:

client     error     19:20:26.109292-1000     vmware-vmx     unable to normalize volume: "<private>", tmp_result: <private>

client     error     19:20:26.109386-1000     vmware-vmx     Failed to get available space for volume <private>: Error Domain=CacheDeleteErrorDomain Code=10 UserInfo={Volume=<private>}

client     error     19:20:26.109509-1000     vmware-vmx     unable to normalize volume: "<private>", tmp_result: <private>

client     error     19:20:26.109654-1000     vmware-vmx     validatedCachedResults: unable to create keyName from: {
     "CACHE_DELETE_AVAILABLE_SPACE_CLASS" = 3;
     "CACHE_DELETE_VOLUME" = "/dev";
     }

(See attachment for more from Console.)

I assume this is due to some new security feature in macOS 11 preventing programs from taking control of partitions/volumes.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix or workaround?

Windows jumping about when re-fousing on Fusion 11.5

Hi peeps,

Having a really strange issue since upgrading to Fusion 11.5.  I'm running on a MacPro with Mojave 10.14.6 and haven't done anything with the system update, just with Fusion.

I use Fusion in full screen mode on a second monitor.  If i click outside into the native Mac environment on the primary monitor and then back to Fusion, I'm getting the front window of the Windoze application jumping about.  Sometimes it's making a 'click-drag' selection in the Win application as it all moves around.  There's no heavy process running in the background of either environment, but it's just like there's been a mouse click lag.  Everything was running just fine right up until the Fusion upgrade so I'm confident it's something to do with the new version.  VMtools are up to date etc.

Has anyone else come across this one yet?  It's doing my head in!

Cheers

Rob

Cannot save virtual machine

I had to reinstall Fusion 11 and now I can't install Windows from the iso file.

I can only go as far as "save the virtual machine" then I get the following messages (in that order):

- Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe

- Failed to initialize monitor device

- Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken

Any ideas?

Fusion 12 on Mac App Store

Since Fusion 12 can now run without kernel extensions, are there any plans to bring it to the Mac App Store anytime soon (at least the free Player version)?

Trying to install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12:

Poor overvall performance of Fusion 12 with old Windows as guests with Big Sur beta host...even with side channel mitigations disabled

Hi,

Had Fusion upgraded from 11.5.x (whatever the latest was) to 12.0 on my 10.5.6 Catalina MBP 16'' earlier this week, did the same on my Mac mini late 2012 host as well, performance was identical to Fusion 11.5, and then upgraded my Catalina MBP to the latest Big Fur public beta, which went all.

I then noticed a significant drop in overall performance of some of my guests VMs. I turned off the side-channel mitigation feature in my VMs settings, as suggested, but no improvement noticeable.

Symptoms are :

- much slower graphics (windows being drawn on screen are noticeable)

- much slower "CPU feel" performance, including boot-up time, time to get to desktop once logged in, launching apps...

This happens with three of my guests, namely Win2K, Win98SE and WinXP. Strangely enough, my Win7 VM runs apparently as quickly as before, possibly even faster, and is now my guest OS that runs the quickest out of all 4, which certainly wasn't the case before.

The exact same VMs (as they've been copied between my hosts) still run perfectly fine with Fusion 12 on my Catalina Mac mini host, thus using the older kext virtualization engine, so I'm guessing the issue is related to the API virtualization engine of Big Sur. For sure Big Sur is still in beta, but was wondering if this is to be expected or what solutions/troubleshooting you'd suggest?

Already tried :

- resinstalling Tools in said guests

- reinstalling Fusion 12 from scratch in Big Sur

- adjusting number of CPU cores/RAM in Win2k and WinXP guests

Thanks

Is there something I'm missing to complete this registration?

i found the usb devices cannot connect to virtual system and i have it set to ask which device to connect to but this window does not appear since i updated the vm fusion and macos.

   the usb devices now are directly connected to macos without any waring or ask as before

   i've selected "allow" for VM fusion in macos system preferences,security and privacy settings

does anyone have the same problem and how to deal with it?

thanks

Free Fusion12 player license confusion

I currently have a standard Fusion 11 license (have purchased multiple upgrades

over the years).  I was using it for Windows apps that were needed for work.

Since retiring, I no longer use Fusion for work purposes any more and more

for as a hobbyist.  Can I simply get the free license and upgrade without issues?

Other than being a new Fusion version and need to update support tools, will all

VMs work as they did before.

Unable to download Fusion 12

This is infuriating.

I just payed to upgrade Fusion 11.5 to Fusion 12.

I went to download it and it says my request to download is being evaluated. Verify that your profile is correct.

I did that and it still says 'something' is wrong. Won't tell me what.

How about doing that check BEFORE I give you money.

VMX option to disable use of XSAVE instruction under Big Sur

$

I am running Big Sur on "unsupported" hardware - a Mac Pro 5,1. With updated graphics and WiFi/BLE it is actually running without patches,

To avoid KEXTs VMware 12 is using some extended instructions  like XSAVE under Big Sur. Parallels still allows using it with KEXTs and works fine right now.

Is there a VMX parameter to disable this?

monitor.allowLegacyCPU = "true" does not do it.

Upgraded to VMWare Fusion Pro 12.0 -> Causing Windows 10 to crash in TradeStation 10

Yesterday (regrettably), I upgraded to VMWare Fusion Pro 12.0. The upgrade went pretty smoothly until I tried firing up TradeStation 10 - my trading app. It causes my Windows 10 to crash / BSOD. See attached screenshot. It happens every time and seems to have something to do with the VMware Tools - display driver. I did uninstall VMWare Tools and reinstall it but this made no difference. Has anybody else experienced anything like this?

Stop code: PFN SHARE COUNT.

What failed: vm3dmp.sys

If I can't get this to work, how difficult is it to go back to Fusion 11.5?

Attempting to do nested virtualization

$

I am running the public beta of Mac - Big Sur public beta 3. I see that VMWare Fusion has full Big Sur support based on the website. Currently, I'm trying to run nested virtualization on a Ubuntu-20.04 instance and i'm getting the error "VMware Fusion does not support nested virtualization on this host. Module 'HV' power on failed. Failed to start the virtual machine"

I have enabled hypervisor applications in the virtual machine under Processors and memory.

Is there anything I need to do in order to have this run successfully?

Thanks!

I can't seem to use VMWare Fusion anymore after the 11.5.6 update due to the above error, which includes no helpful information at all.

I'm not getting any prompts in "Settings & Privacy" and "VMWare Fusion.app" has Full Disk Access.

I removed the VM from my VM Library and added it back, but that didn't help. I restarted the VMWare Fusion app, but that didn't help.

MacOS 10.15.6, Fusion 12.0.0.0 Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken

$

Update: I just rebooted another time (not sure how many this was, but at least twice over an hour). Then I re-ran Fusion 12 trying to get something to change when I saw these two nagging pops for "vmnet-cli" something else. After I restarted for the second time, I saw a new approval from VMware, Inc. waiting in Security & Privacy popup. I was able those nagging popups came once again and this time, when I clicked on Open, then actually opened and allowed the VM to run.

I guess the moral of this story is, you have to wait, restart the Mac and VMWare a bunch, and in some magic timing, you will be able to get the correct approval to show up and get this working. I hope VMWare takes a look at this and tries to make it a little smoother experience, next time.

Fusion 12 is still trying to load a kernel extension it seems. I get monitor errors upon boot up. It is trying to load 'vmmon' and errors, then throws "Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken" error afterwards.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, re-dowloaded Fusion 12, plus both VMs I am trying to load. Nothing seems to work.

All system approvals have been completed in Privacy and Security. Still, nothing works.

I tried to manually load the vmmon.kext kernel extension, but MacOS would not allow it due to the read-only system partition.

Fusion 12 says is does not use kernel extensions, but the errors say different.

Can anyone help? I am about at my wits end on this one.

Thanks,

Unable to open file ".../Boot Camp.vmwarevm/Boot Camp.vmdk": The system cannot find the file specified

$

If you have a BOOTCAMP volume and you randomly get Unable to open file ".../Boot Camp.vmwarevm/Boot Camp.vmdk" errors when launching VMWare Fusion it could be because the disk volume has changed upon boot. You cannot be guaranteed that the disk assigned to your BOOTCAMP volume is the same each boot. For me it will randomly change between disk0 and disk1.

So I wrote a little script to run at startup that will change the disk to the correct one.

The script assumes your BOOTCAMP volume is named BOOTCAMP. Also replace YOUR_USERNAME with your user name.

Create a script called vmware_fix.sh:

#!/bin/bash
FILE_VMDK="/Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/Boot Camp.vmwarevm/Boot Camp.vmdk"
DRIVE_NEW=$(diskutil list | awk '/BOOTCAMP/{print $NF}' | cut -c 1-5)
if grep -q disk0 "$FILE_VMDK"; then  DRIVE_OLD=disk0
fi
if grep -q disk1 "$FILE_VMDK"; then  DRIVE_OLD=disk1
fi
sed -i.bak "s/$DRIVE_OLD/$DRIVE_NEW/g" "$FILE_VMDK"

Make sure you change the FILE_VMDK value to be the full path to your Boot Camp vmdk file.

Set the script to executable:

chmod +x ./vmware_fix.sh

Copy the file to /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Applications/

Create a file called com.vmware.Fix.plist and paste the following:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"><plist version="1.0">  <dict>    <key>EnvironmentVariables</key>    <dict>      <key>PATH</key>      <string>/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:</string>    </dict>    <key>Label</key>    <string>com.startup</string>    <key>Program</key>    <string>/Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Applications/vmware_fix.sh</string>    <key>RunAtLoad</key>    <true/>    <key>KeepAlive</key>    <false/>    <key>LaunchOnlyOnce</key>            <true/>    <key>StandardOutPath</key>    <string>/tmp/startup.stdout</string>    <key>StandardErrorPath</key>    <string>/tmp/startup.stderr</string>    <key>UserName</key>    <string>admin</string>    <key>GroupName</key>    <string>admin</string>    <key>InitGroups</key>    <true/>  </dict></plist>

Copy com.vmware.Fix.plist to /Library/LaunchDaemons and run the following commands:

sudo chown root /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vmware.Fix.plist
sudo chgrp wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vmware.Fix.plist
sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vmware.Fix.plist

Hope this helps anyone else in a similar situation.

Can't install El Capitan. Drawing of bluetooth mouse appears.

I'm trying to install El Capitan as a VM on a 2018 Mac Mini running Catalina. I get the VMWare splash screen, then the Apple logo boot screen, then drawings of a Mac wireless mouse alternating with what looks like the edge of a laptop. I have bluetooth turned off and a wired mouse connected. I do not ever get to the pick-a-language screen.
