Working Boot Camp partition "not prepared to run as a virtual machine"

$

I have a 2017 iMac with Mojave (10.14.6) and APFS. Since the pandemic started, have been working from home using a Boot Camp partition with Windows 10 and NTFS. It was a clean install, no cloning or imaging tools used, which boots and runs reliably. I installed the trial version of VMware Fusion 11.5.6, and was planning to run that Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine directly, rather than importing a copy. (I want to have easy access to both OSes, but will sometimes boot directly into Windows for hardware-intensive tasks like CAD, design, and gaming.)

Windows had been properly shut down, but when I created the VM, I got this message:

The Boot Camp volume is not prepared to run as a virtual machine. It appears that Windows did not shut down cleanly the last time it was used.

To shut down Windows cleanly, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and set Windows as the startup operating system. Restart your system. Once in Windows, use the Startup Disk pane in the Control Panel to select Mac OS X as the startup system, then click the Restart button to return to OS X.

The first few times, it made a broken VM that can't find its boot disk. The last few times, it doesn't create a VM at all.

Here are the steps I have tried so far:

  • No change -- the procedure suggested in the error message
  • No change -- steps from https://communities.vmware.com/thread/152344 :
    • open the Mac terminal
    • rm -dfr "~/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines"
    • reboot into Mac and try making the VM again
  • No change -- steps from https://communities.vmware.com/thread/635124 :
    • boot into Windows, and run the command
    • shutdown /s /f /t 0
    • reboot into Mac and try making the VM again
  • No change -- completely remove VMware, reboot, reinstall VMware, and try again
  • No change -- steps from https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2151780
    • reboot into Recovery mode
    • disable System Integrity Protection
    • reboot into Mac and try making the VM again

Tried the usual things mentioned on web, but v12 (forced) upgrade keeps falling over on boot with "The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine".

Host = MacPro 2019 + Catalina 10.15.6

Client = VMWare + Catalina 10.15.6

Having trouble with older USB HID devices - 16" MBP, Catalina, Big Sur, Fusion 11.5 & 12

Sorry if this is somewhat long-winded and vague. I'm trying to figure out where to even look for answers here, but I can not get some older HID devices to connect to a Windows VM (Win7 Pro 32bit).  Specifically older URC programmable remotes like the MX-900.  All other USB devices work just fine, hubs, flash drives, mice, etc..  I have added lines to the .vmx config file to connect generic USB and to allow HID and all that.

Everything was working perfect on a 15" MacBook Pro running OS X 10.14. Running Fusion 10... Thunderbolt 3 ports were not an issue, provided the right cable/ adapter.  I upgraded to a new 16" MBP and I upgraded to Fusion 11.5 whatever at some point over the past several months.  Everything was working fine, but I'm not sure when these HID device remotes became an issue.  Did not need to program one until now...  Running a VM of Windows 7 32bit and like I said, everything works perfectly except older non-specific HIDs.

Not sure if there's a problem with the new MacBook Pro in that it has improved security/ USB restrictions.  Not sure if it's newer OS X revisions, namely 10.15 Catalina. Not sure if something has changed with Fusion in recent updates.  For grins, I tried Fusion 12 on my iMac Pro running OS X 11 Big Sur beta 6.  And once again just now after upgrading to Beta 7.  Everything works great, except these old devices.  ..Some graphics performance issues with Fusion 12, but I see a couple other threads on that.

This is a very difficult problem to diagnose.  These remote control units do not show in the hardware list in OS X system profiler when connected. They never did when working properly.  But Windows would pick them up and connect just fine.  Just not now with the latest hardware and software combination.

If anyone has any idea where I could start diagnosing this.  On the OS X side of things, these devices never show in profiler or when going to the command line to print a device list.  And while they have worked for years, now my Windows VMs can't see them.  I'm doubting it's the hardware, as I'm pretty sure I've programmed them from the iMac Pro, which now is not seeing them.  So I'm thinking it may be possibly an OS X issue.  Maybe an issue with newer versions of Fusion.  I suppose I'll have to go set up a system with Fusion 10 that works and then upgrade to 11 and see if it breaks.

Anyone else having a similar issue?  Probably not...  Most people who still deal with these old remotes are using older systems for that.  Which I had to just do.  Spent half a day pulling my hair out over this and then had to drag out an old Dell laptop with Win7 to do actual work.

2 popup dialog boxes before starting my VM on Catalina

Hi All,

Am running VMWare Version 11.1.1 (14328561) and am starting a Windows 10 VM. Am in the latest version of the Developer Beta of Catalina (10.15 Beta (19A526h)).

When I start my VM, I get two pop up dialog boxes. 1st says "com.vmware.VMMonHelper" is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" and the 2nd says "com.vmware.KextControlHelper" is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?"

If I click Open on each dialog, my VM opens fine. I'd just like to get those pop up dialog boxes to go away. I know that apps need to be approved in the Control Panel / Security & Privacy area, but those two apps don't show up for me there...

What do I need to do?

Thanks in advance!

Fusion 12 and USB Mic (Powermic II) not working

I have used my Nuance Powermic II fine with macOS and under parallels.

However with fusion, it shows as connected under virtual machine->usb and bluetooth->

and it shows up under device manager

however under settings->sound-> it is selected as the input source but not receiving any input. when I change to internal mic it works fine.

So, basically seems to be installed correctly and selected as input just doesn't want to actually be a microphone....???

any ideas?

Fusion 8

I have Fusion 8 on a MacBook with OSX Yosemite, V 10.10.5

I get a message that says: New Features are available for your virtual machine.

To upgrade, power off this virtual machine and choose "Virtual Machine>Settings...>Compatibility"

I cannot proceed with using Fusion 8 until I do this upgrade. How do I power off the virtual machine and go through the rest of the upgrade process?

And while the question may have a simple answer, I am not computer literate at all, thus my reason for asking. Thank you.

Unable to connect USB drive on VM with Linux Mint

On a Mac with OSX 10.15.6, I have VMWare Pro 11.5.6 running, with a VM running Linux Mint 20 (Ulyana) - kernel 5.4.0-47

When an external USB drive is connected, and redirected to the VM i get an error message:

The device "WD2TB (Western Digital Elements SE 25FE)" was unable to connect to its ideal host controller.

An attempt will be made to connect this device in the best available host controller.

And then nothing happens anymore.

fdisk -l doesnt show the external drive.

When I connect another driver, i get the same message.

When I connect to the Mac, then there is no issues, the drives can be read.

Any thoughts how to fix this?

Can a paid VMware Fusion 12 Player license be downgraded?

I am currently on Fusion 8.  I wanted to upgrade to Fusion 11, but in the middle of my researching that upgrade, Fusion 12 was released and 11 is no longer available for purchase.

Can a paid VMware Fusion 12 Player license be downgraded to Fusion 11?

Thanks.

Well, 2 betas later, it is not.

Fusion 12, whose main feature is compaitbility with Big Sur, is currently unusable with Big Sur.

Does VMware Fusion 12 have USB issues?

$

Hi and thanks in anticipation. In anticipation of Big Sur I upgraded VMware to VMware Player 12. In doing so I lost USB connectivity. I get a message saying the USB device is being used by the host and to shutdown the host application or reload it. Unfortunately there is no host application using the device. Going back to an earlier version of Vmware and downgrading the VM in the compatibility options gets the USB ports working again. Any suggestions and has anyone else had an issue with USB on version 12?

VMWare 12.0 doesn't seem to be able to release the device from the Mac. Without any changes at all, on reloading VMware 11.5 all USB functions restored.

Anyway To Hide VMWare Fusion From Dock In Unity Mode?

I like that VMWare Fusion shows an icon in the dock that allows us to launch apps within VMWare when in Unity mode. But it also has the other VMWare Fusion icon in the dock as well. Is there any way of hiding that from the dock? Parallels has an option where when you're unity mode, only the icon that allows you to access the menu and launch apps is visible in the dock. It would be great if we had this same option unless i've missed it somewhere?

I have the persona license, etc., but whether I use Firefox or Safari, the button to "manually download" does nothing.  My pop-up blockers are now disabled, same issue.

I was able to download with my Pixel 2 Android, but want  VMware ppl/staff/community to be aware of this issue and/or provide the fix.

VPN blocked by Fusion on Guest machine

$

Hi All,

Bit of background. I have Fusion 8, but since working from home I have had issues as my computer is no longer patched into the work server. The VPN to our server works fine on the Mac (host machine), but the guest (Windows machine) had a lot of issues. It would not even run Outlook or load the internet when I finally got it to connect. I thought perhaps the updated version of Fusion would be necessary, so I have been trialing Fusion 11.5 but it is like something is blocking connection to the VPN. I have even created a separate VM with a reinstalled version of Windows - so a blank machine, and have managed to get Outlook synced and the internet running properly but still cannot access the VPN. The Fusion 8 machine will do neither. I have tried calling VMWare Sales to find the answer and after 3 hours there was still no answer! Apparently it should work as I posted on Twitter, but they did not say how?! I have 7 days left of the trial and I want to find out if I can get the VPN on the host machine working. If I can then I will upgrade, if I can't, I shall remain with Fusion 8.

Also, does anybody know if I upgrade to Fusion 11.5 whether I would get any technical support to get the VPN working or if I just pay for the upgrade and am left to figure out the issue myself!

Best regards...and do hope someone has an idea of how to resolve this issue!

No Function Keys When Using Unity Mode

I've noticed that the only icon on my touchbar when using Unity mode is a little square icon which switches VMWare Fusion back to Single Window mode. How do I restore the function keys on my touchbar? this is an absolute must for me.

Disk cleanup overstating/overcleaning reclaimable space

Had a friend reach out with this one and thought I'd ping here to see if anyones heard of it.

"I went to clean up my virtual machine...it's about 2TB, and it showed 400GB of reclaimable space.  When I did the cleanup, windows wouldn't boot because it was corrupt and a lot of data was lost.  Fortunately it wasn't an important VM, so I just deleted and recreated, but now I'm not sure I trust the cleanup function anymore."

He didn't save logs or anything, but does anyone have an inkling of what happened?
